It has been 19 years since the movie Love Jones was released. I am so happy to confirme that the Love Jones  Musical is coming to Toronto on December 11th 2016. The musical stars 6 music artists including Chrisette Michelle, Mc Lyte, Musiq Soulchild, Marsha Ambrosia, Dave Hollister and Raheem Devaughn.

Anyone who has seen the movie knows that Love Jones is a classical, black movie depicting black love. It is a movie most of us hold close to our hearts. Will the musical live up to its audiences expectations. After reading reviews where the musical has already played in such as the Philadelphia Tribune who wrote: “if you’ve come to the theatre expecting a live redux of the beloved 1997 romantic comedy starring Nia Long and Larenz Tate, which was apparently the case during Philadelphia’s opening night, this could be a rude awakening”. I can only conclude this: those of you who are going expecting the comedic love story of Nina and Darius may be a tad disappointed. For one, Chrisette Michelle and Tony Grant star as Nina and Darius. A little older than the original characters, played by Larenz Tate and Nia Long but l think will probably suit the older audience that is likely to attend. On the contrary, those who are going to hear these awesome artist bawl out a few notes, you are in for a treat.

The musical follows some of the main elements of the film, however, new music and characters have been added to this adaption by producer, Melvin Childs who stated in an interview, “it’s just no way you can make it exactly like the movie”.

Regardless of what the reviews are saying I’m still going to go check it out myself. I’m just now going to kill myself for front row tickets anymore. I can hear them just fine from the middle.

Love Jones is set to play in  31 cities including Toronto. Tickets have been on sale since Friday November 4th.
